The last remaining northern chimney stacks at the former Morwell Power Station were collapsed on Saturday morning, the last major structures to be demolished as part of the Energy Brix Australia Pty Ltd (EBAC) Demolition Project.
EBAC Remediation General Manager, Barry Dungey, said the collapse went to plan with the first 94 metre chimney stack collapsed just before 8am and the second about two hours later.
A small crowd, including some former employees at the old briquette factory, gathered in the former employees’ carpark to watch the event, cheering as the chimneys collapsed. Most had camera equipment to film the historic moment.
Mr Dungey paid tribute to demolition company Delta. “All building collapses on our site have occurred exactly as planned with safety our priority,” he said.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of March.
